World in One School

Our ‘World in One School’ festival is a week where students follow an alternative timetable and work with performers, musicians, artists, actors, poets, and designers to produce work linked to an annual theme. Students learn about professionals, their backgrounds, what inspires them, and their journeys. The programme brings cultural capital to learning whilst helping students discover new interests, raising aspirations and fostering a ‘can do’ attitude.

We ran over 80 visits and activities during our Belonging themed week in July 2023 through close partnerships with local organisations and businesspeople, many with a global reputation. These include National Museums Liverpool, Katumba, Capoeira, Brian D Hanlon, Loudspeaker, Liverpool Lantern Company, Faith Bebbington, Ean Flanders, Levi Tafari, Royal Court Theatre, Shakespeare North, Wirral Samba Band, the RAF, and Handstand Film Company. The high-profile experts helped our children to feel connected to their community and showcased future career opportunities. The partnerships give students access to difference and the excellent cultural capital and learning opportunities we have available.

“World in One School week is excellent. We have had the opportunity to do lots of diverse types of work with artists that do this for a living. We have studied things we may not do in normal lessons, about culture, about teamwork and understanding each other. The week was all about belonging. We all belong at Childwall!” Year 9 student

Headteacher Ms. Vincent said: “World in One School offered students a fantastic, positive, and enjoyable experience working alongside cultural organisations to develop cultural awareness and new skills. Students embraced new opportunities that enriched their learning and development. They have created, written, performed, researched, explored, and experimented with new materials, skills and knowledge. Students have learnt about radio and film production, sculptures of different scales, poems, photographs, Brazilian dance, drumming, assault courses, problem solving, public speaking.”

Childwall Celebrates Success

The staff at Childwall Sports and Science Academy would like to say well done to Year 11 and Key Stage 5 students on their results in 23/24 academic year. Students that worked hard certainly got what they deserved, with a number of them achieving well above their target grade and making considerable progress from Key Stage 2 scores. We also recognise that 28 of our students joined us during their secondary phase of learning from other countries around the world. We are delighted that many of these young people attained high grades in traditional subjects and Distinction and Distinction* in vocational qualifications.

Key Stage 5 students must be congratulated on the Level 3 outcomes. The average A Level grade has increased on last year and grades in our technical courses such as IT, Health and Sport have resulted in very positive progress. All students have been able to choose their next learning pathway into higher education, apprenticeships and employment – good luck to all.

“It’s an absolute delight and privilege to be with students on results day. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing our students who have worked hard to attain the grades they deserve, which in turn means that they have a choice in what they can do next. I would like to offer my personal congratulations to all the students and staff that went the extra mile, and to the parents that supported us when things got tough. Well done everybody!” Ms Vincent, Headteacher.

We now look forward to the next phase in our learning across the academy. Staff have been busy over the summer break updating technology and classroom environments to ensure we have the most up to date equipment that will allow our teachers to teach to the best of their ability whilst being mobile and interacting with the children to further enhance metacognition. ‘Learning Without Limits’ is our mantra.

Childwall Wins NACE Challenge Award

Staff, students, parents, and governors at Childwall Sports and Science Academy are celebrating after being awarded the coveted National Association for More Able Children (NACE) Challenge Award.

The award was given in recognition of school-wide commitment to high-quality provision for more able learners, within the context of challenge for all.Childwall Academy is the first school in Liverpool to achieve the award, which only 2% of UK schools hold.

To attain the Challenge Award, schools must complete a detailed self-evaluation using the NACE Challenge Framework, submit a portfolio of supporting evidence, and undertake assessment by a NACE associate. To attain the Challenge Award, schools must complete a detailed self-evaluation using the NACE Challenge Framework, submit a portfolio of supporting evidence, and undertake assessment by a NACE associate.

The assessment process includes examination of school data and key documents; lesson observations; and interviews with school leaders, learners, parents, and governors.

NACE CEO Rob Lightfoot said: “Childwall Academy has worked successfully to attain the NACE Challenge Award. The school has shown it is committed to developing an environment in which all learners are both challenged and supported to be the best they can be.”

Christabel Shepherd, NACE Director of Challenge and Curriculum Development, said: “We were very impressed by the school’s ambition to provide challenge for all learners through the rigorous development and consistent application of evidence-based practice within an ambitious curriculum, delivered by expert and creative staff. As a result, students regularly experience opportunities to think deeply, make connections between concepts and become more independent in their learning.”

Ms. Vincent, Headteacher said: “Attaining the Challenge Award is very important to us. Our school motto of ‘Learning without limits’ means something to our school community. We are delighted that the assessor can see that students and staff at Childwall Sports and Science Academy are ambitious and continue to develop learning opportunities that are of the highest standard.”

A student told: “‘Our teachers make us think harder. They encourage us to critique and build on each other’s ideas, and instead of giving us an answer they encourage us to think more to come up with our own responses.”

Childwall Goes Plastic Free

Childwall Sports and Science Academy Canteens have gone plastic free thanks to a new project involving students, catering staff, school leadership and the estates department.

Last September, Childwall Academy Headteacher Ms. Vincent met the Student Council to discuss sustainability and ways to reduce the school’s environmental footprint.

The students were passionate about reducing plastic use across the school. Key opportunities included the purchase of single use drinks bottles and use of plastic cutlery and plates in the school canteen.

The canteen team has stopped using all single use plastic and now use metal cutlery and crockery to serve food. This initiative has significantly reduced plastic waste.

Childwall Academy has introduced a JuCi hydration station in the canteen in and given each student a branded reusable metal bottle. Instead of purchasing hundreds of plastic bottled drinks each day, the school’s 980 students can now buy sustainable daily refills. In a full school year, this initiative will reduce plastic waste by 3.2 tonnes and reduce delivery emissions by 83%. The JuCi Hydration stations use 30% less energy than single door chillers.

Ms. Vincent, Headteacher, said: “Our Student Council is hugely passionate about climate change and making a difference now and in the future. Working together, we have managed to eradicate plastic waste in the canteen which is a huge achievement.”

Student Council member Ania said: “Sustainability is important to our generation as we want to look after the planet and resolve plastic pollution. Our new eco-friendly bottles are good for the planet.”

Fellow student Melissa added: “I am proud to be involved in this initiative. We are saving the earth one bottle at a time.”
